MaCio Teague Highlights

Compilation of highlights from '15 (incoming freshman) SG MaCio Teague. A pure shooting wing with good size and a nice handle, Teague is one of Ohio's top prospects in his age group. Last season as an 8th grader MaCio was dominant for his Princeton MS team, he is still undecided as to where he will be attending high school. 

Weekend AAU Report:

All-Ohio Purple

Memorial day weekend always brings out some good competition around SW Ohio, and this year was no different. Several local teams competed in the Kings Island Memorial Day Madness tournament in Cincinnati while other teams descended on Chicago, Columbus, Fort Wayne, and even Los Angeles to play against other top traveling teams. CPHR was able to take in the action in Columbus on Friday and Saturday at the annual Midwest Future Stars Showcase. 

All-Ohio Purple: Without All-Ohio Red in the field the road was clear for Purple to have an easy path to the championship game. In the title game they struggled with a passionate Columbus Hawks outfit but got the two point win. SG Tommy Kreyenhagen (Summit) was the tourney MVP; while SG Jermaine Freeman (Taft), PG Geovonie McKnight (Middletown), and SF Jalean Lowe (Taft) made the All-Tourney team. AOP also benefited from the play of PG Josh Lemons (LaSalle) who seems to have fully recovered from injury. 

All-Ohio Red 16u: Won the 16u division of the event by defeating All-Ohio Varsity in the final for the second time in as many weekends. PF's Marc Loving (Toledo St. Johns) and Nigel Hayes (Toledo Whitmer) continue their strong play since returning from playing in Italy. Loving was the event MVP for the 16's while Hayes and PG Jaaron Simmons (Kettering Alter) made the All-Tourney team. 

Mark Williams

King James Shooting Stars 16u: While the team didn't make the championship game this weekend they had one major bright spot as they received the services of PF Mark Williams (Cleveland Benedictine). Williams has solidified himself as one of Ohio's premier prospects; the 6'8 forward has a smooth jumpshot with the ability to face up and attack the rim. This is all complimented by his broad build and solid athleticism. Williams will continue to be a matchup nightmare for any team he plays against with his ability to dominate the 3-5 spots. 

Shining Stars (Price) 17u: If you say one thing about this team it's that, as usual under Coach Price, they play hard. CPHR came away impressed with '14 PG Tyler Williams (Lakota West) who had two solid games while playing up two age groups. Williams has a nice body for a PG, can handle pressure, sees the floor pretty well, and really shoots the ball nicely. He's an interesting guard to keep an eye on for West next year.

Shining Stars (Walthar) 17u: Another scrappy team that has some under the radar talent. CPHR was impressed with the play of wing Drew Hall (McNicholas). One Shining Star assistant coach told CPHR, "You never seem to notice it during the game but you look in the book afterwards and Drew will always have 15-20 points." That's kind of how it was this year as Hall was the leading scorer in the GCL. 

Tyler Williams of Lakota West

Ohio Basketball Club 16u: Lost in the finals at the Best Buy Chicago Classic presented by Indiana Elite. OBC lost to CIA Bounce (Canada) for the second time this weekend in the title game but had a strong showing. 

All-Ohio Red 17u: In the third event of the Nike EYBL, in Los Angeles, Red was off to a tough start with an 0-2 record. AOR finishes the long weekend scrambling to qualify for the EYBL finals at the Nike Peach Jam in Georgia in July. For more AOR EYBL coverage click on the Buckeye Prep Report link on the left. 

Cincinnati Knights 17u Gold: Won the prestigious Gym Rats Memorial Day Classic presented by Spiece in Fort Wayne. '11 PG Semaj Christon (Winton Woods) was terrorizing opponents all weekend while HS teammate PF Zach McCorkle provided a major spark off the bench on the interior as did PF Paul Woodson (Clark). 

Zach McCormick Highlights

Nice collections of highlights from Dixie Heights '14 SG Zach McCormick, who played his freshman season at Wilmington before transferring over the river. McCormick's AAU team Kentucky Select 15u played last weekend in the Kentucky State tournament. Although they didn't take the title, the team is considered one of the elite teams in the region.

Highlights are also available from McCormick's AAU (and now HS) teammate Brandon Hatton. One of Kentucky's top young prospects Hatton is a scoring machine for Kentucky Select and Dixie Heights. These two should team up for some special basketball over the next three seasons.

Two Guards Transfer in to Colerain

Milt Davis

The Colerain Cardinals have two new guards that are excited to help boost their backcourt production next year in Milt Davis and Kane Thompson. Both Davis, who transferred after two years of varsity basketball at Summit, and Thompson, who spent last season at Aiken, are combo guards that will be juniors next season. At Summit, Milt Davis was known as a defensive stopper with a nice handle and deep range on his jump shot; at 6'1 Davis has good size for a PG and is more then capable of playing off ball. Thompson is a 5'10 scoring guard that lit the score board up for the Aiken JV team this season, his penetrating abilities should help a Cardinals offense that struggled to score this season.

Colerain now has more then enough talent in the backcourt as they return their top two scorers in wings Eli'Sha Campbell ('12 SF) and Bryan Porter ('13 SG) who both averaged about 11 ppg last season. The Cardinals also return two small but talented PG prospects in junior to be Deiontay Walters and rising sophomore Kiere Bennie, both of whom saw significant varsity action last year. Combined with the talents of sophomore to be Trevon Hudson, an ultra athletic wing, next years team will have a chance to lead the Cards back to where they were in '09-'10 when they made the Regional Semifinal.

Nike Super 16- Recap

A ton of Ohio talent was showing their stuff up in Columbus this weekend for the 3rd annual All-Ohio Nike Super 16. Unfortuantely ,due to the increase of locations, CPHR was not able to see every team that we had planned on but did catch a lot of great games, teams, and prospects. • All-Ohio Red: Another championship for Ohio's top 17u squad. Red defeated the Ohio Hoopsters in the semi's and then King James in the finals to claim the trophy. Kenny Kaminski, Elijah Macon, and Myles Hamilton all made the All-Tourney team while Shaker Heights PG Terry Rozier was named tournament MVP.
  
  
• All-Ohio Purple: Playing with a lineup that only included one big man in Findlay 7'0 center CJ Gettys, AOP was able to make a run to the semi's before losing to the King James Shooting Stars. Purple got really good play this weekend from Willy Moore along with Tommy Kreyenhagen, Geovonie McKnight, and Jalean Lowe.
  
  
• Ohio Hoopsters: Another good weekend for a team on the rise. The Hoopsters made it to the semi's before falling to All-Ohio Red by 9. Andre Yates (Dunbar), Joe Thomasson (Thurgood Marshall), and Gary Akbar (Dunbar) all had very good weekends for the Hoopsters along with pure scorer Tyler White (Lima Senior).

  Jack Gibbs is becoming one of Ohio's best PG's.

  King James Shooting Stars: Lost in the finals of the Gold bracket to All-Ohio Red in a close game. Very good weekend for King James as they advanced past All-Ohio Purple and made the final without star Lorenzo Cugini. King James was led by Shelton Jeter and Mike Newton who made the All-Tourney team. 
  
  
• West Virginia Wildcats: Won the Silver bracket behind the play of Tourney MVP Devon Scott, a Columbus Northland center.

16u

• All-Ohio Red: AOR continued their undefeated spring since the return of star big men Nigel Hayes (PF Toledo Whitmer) and Marc Loving (PF Toledo St. Johns). Red defeated rival All-Ohio Varsity in the finals behind the play of Tourney MVP Jaaron Simmons (PG Kettering Alter).

• All-Ohio Varsity: Lost in the finals to All-Ohio Red after defeating All-Ohio Grey and Team CBIZ. Varsity advanced due to their usual defensive intensity and the hot shooting of Westerville North PG Jack Gibbs, who might be Ohio's top PG prospect, and Gahanna Lincoln SF Aaron Jackson.

• Team CBIZ: Lost in the semi's to All-Ohio Varsity, CBIZ was led by the play of Jamestown Greenview combo-forward Evan Bradds.

• 

  Mark Alstork was one of the weekend's high scorers.

  Ohio Basketball Club: Lost in the semi's to All-Ohio Red. OBC got strong play all weekend from Summit PG Kevin Johnson and Garfield Heights forward Tony Farmer. 

• All-Ohio Grey: After handily defeating Martin's Wolverines in the round of 16, Grey went down (in an intensely fought game) to All-Ohio Varsity. AOG was led for the weekend by Thurgood Marshall's Edmond “Junior” Early (PG/SG) and Mark Alstork (SG/SF). Toledo Rogers SG Clemmye Owens was also a scoring machine for Grey on Sunday, while Bowling Green post Vitto Brown was the defensive stopper and rebounder. 

• King James Shooting Stars: Lost in the quarterfinals, in overtime, to Ohio Basketball Club. As usual, King James was led by Cleveland Heights wing Maurice O'Field.

• Martin's Wolverines: After winning their pool the Wolverines lost in the round of 16 to All-Ohio Grey. DJ Wingfield showed a nice overall floor game, Maverick Morgan (PF Springboro) played tough down low, and Lakota East SG Stedman Lowry hit several deep shots over the weekend.   

Geovonie McKnight Highlight Tape

Cincy Prep Hoops Report is proud to release it's first highlight tape. Middletown junior combo guard Geovonie McKnight might be the #1 player on CPHR's rankings; but due to location a lot of people still haven't gotten to see him play. Here's a quick glimpse of what G can do on the court:

After watching only Geovonie on tape for 5 games CPHR learned a few things about his game:

1. He has serious court vision- many of the assists on here are truly spectacular passes.
2. He is a great athlete- his body control to finish plays through contact at full speed is unmatched. It seemed like half of every game CPHR watched was him shooting free throws (with a lot of And 1's).
3. He does so many little things- steals, rebounds, passing, scoring, Geovonie is Mr. Versatility.
4. He is an intense competitor.

Trent Donald Transfer

After two years at Woodward sophomore PF Trent Donald is taking his game, on the hardwood and gridiron, to Winton Woods HS. Donald, the #6 player in CPHR's 2013 rankings, will provide immediate scoring help to a Warriors team that lost three major scorers in Semaj Christon, Dennis Thomas, and Dion Dearmond to graduation. With his offensive versatility and scoring touch Trent is one of the favorites to be the FAVC's leading scorer next season. Trent will also be a part of next years youth movement at Winton Woods as 6 sophomores, all of whom were major contributors on  JV this year as freshman, should make the varsity squad in '11-'12. At Woodward this season Trent averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds (good enough for 1st team all league) while having to be Mr. Everything for his Bulldogs squad. Donald is currently thriving on the AAU circuit with the Cincinnati Lakers.

Zach McCormick to Transfer

Zach McCormick of a 6'2 SG from Wilmington is transferring to Dixie Heights (KY) for his sophomore season. As a freshman at Wilmington, McCormick was sensational with averages of 16.7 points per game along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. These numbers, along with the high praises from many opposing coaches and scouts helped McCormick reach #2 in CPHR's class of 2014 rankings, he was also named first team all FAVC.

Interestingly enough, Dixie Heights is led by another class of 2014 stud. 6'2 SG Brandon Hatton is considered one of, if not the best, freshman in the state of Kentucky. Hatton scored 17.8 points per game in his freshman campaign while leading his team to a 29-4 record. Hatton and McCormick play together on the AAU scene with the loaded Kentucky Select 15u team.

17u AAU Teams Making Noise

All-Ohio Purple's Willy Moore

The 17u (Rising Senior) level of AAU is always the most fun to follow because it is a player's last chance to make a name for their self and their team. This season we have seen solid play from several Cincinnati based AAU programs, and a few Columbus programs with Cincinnati guys as well. Here's a look at the teams to watch for as we get closer to the State Tournament and the July college coaches evaluation period: 

• All-Ohio Purple: New year, same results; AOP continues to be the team to beat in Cincinnati, and will be unless someone can finally dethrone them after winning consecutive HS level state championships. This year's team really won't come back together until the state tournament, when all 5 of their Taft players will be able to play at once. Still in their absence they have gotten tremendous production from PG Josh Lemons (LaSalle), SG Tommy Kreyenhagen (Summit), and new acquisitions SG Willy Moore (Aiken), PG Geovonie McKnight (Middletown), and 7'0 post CJ Gettys (Findlay).
  
  
• Cincinnati Knights (Gold): This team has thrived this spring due to their depth, athleticism, length, and experience (several of their players are post-grads headed to prep school). PG Semaj Christon (Winton Woods) has been the leader of this team while SF Jacob Rossi (Franklin), PF Justin Rossi (Franklin), PG Mike Boyd (Lakota East), SF Darrin Harris (Mason), SG Ben Galemmo (Moeller), PF Paul Woodson (Clark), SF Keontae Brown (Dayton Dunbar), and 7'0 post Mike Thipe have all contributed equally for the Knights. 
  
  
• Cincinnati Knights (Black): Fun group to watch because they really play hard and have good team chemistry. They are led by PG Bubba Hill (West High), PF Randale Griffith (Shroder), and PG Trey Dees (Shroder). The Knights black team has also gotten solid contributions from SG Anthony Lamachia (Loveland), SF Darius Pritchett (Princeton), and PF Zach McCorkle (Winton Woods). Finally, SF's Mikey Thompson (Aiken) and Cameron Dunn (St. Xavier) have exceeded expectations through effective contributions despite being a year young.

  

  Cincinnati Knights (Gold) SG Ben Galemmo

  
  
• GameTime Magic: This group has been the surprise of the spring, when this team came together out of nowhere they were not expected to be this good. SG's Deontez McGee (Norwood) and Malcolm Smith (Princeton) have been scoring machines while their huge front court of Chris Connell (Woodward), Tank Young (Princeton), and the newly added Rozelle Nix (Withrow) give them size to match anyone in the country.
  
  
• Queen City Prophets: They have dealt with a lot of roster changes but this team finally seems to have settled on a team dynamic and it's starting to work for them. Their depth in the front court has been their strength as PF Michael Van Kleunen (Mason), C Ladell Griffin (Shroder), and the newly acquired athletic PF Malik London (Chillicothe) give them some big bodies. Guards Darrell Bullock (West High), Jaihlen Teague (Middletown), and Tayvonne Cook (Dayton Dunbar) provide most of the scoring for QCP.
  
  
• Shining Star (Price): An under the radar team that has had some success everywhere they've gone. Wings Eli'Sha Campbell (Colerain) and Alex Voss (Moeller) provide much of this squads offense. SG Drew Hall (McNicholas) and PG James "Woo" Brown (Trotwood-Madison) have been the top complimentary players.

    Cincinnati Knights (Black)

    All-Ohio Red: With Geovonie McKnight departing for Purple this team might not have any Cincinnati guys on it, but you can't talk about Ohio AAU without mentioning them; even though they've fallen short to Purple the last few years they will be the favorites at state's this year. AOR has captured the King James Classic crown, posted solid results at all major tourneys, and has competed with everyone in Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League (featuring the best 40 Nike teams in the country). Red is led by their talented front line of PF Kenny Kaminski (Medina), PF Jalen Robinson (Columbus Northland), and PF Elijah Macon (Marion Franklin). Guards Terry Rozier (Shaker Heights) and Jordan Potts (Columbus Northland) have been the play-makers this year and have really seen their recruiting stock improve.
    
    
  • Ohio Hoopsters: It took a while, but this team is coming together finally. After some initial struggles and several roster changes the Hoopsters advanced to the finals of the Adidas May Classic and look to be hitting a groove. SF Gary Akbar (Dayton Dunbar), PG Andre Yates (Dayton Dunbar), SG Joe Thomasson (Thurgood Marshall), SF Joe Ballard (Thurgood Marshall), and SG Tyler White (Lima Senior) give them a solid core to match a decent amount of size down low.
    
    
  • Columbus Mustang Ballers: Several talented guards from the Greater Columbus area along with Lakota East wings Mark Minch and Allante Foster give this team enough talent to upset anyone, and they have the underdog attitude to pull it off. They also have developing 7'0 C Jake Campbell (Centerville) to combat opposing big men.
    
    
  • All-Ohio Gold: Skilled team of shooters that plays hard and together with guys from all over central Ohio.
    
    
  • All-Ohio Black: Has struggled this season without SG KeChaun Lewis (Columbus Northland) and C Devon Scott (Columbus Northland) but if those two make an appearance at state's the game could change quickly!

Weekend AAU Report

Another exciting weekend on the AAU circuit, CPHR was able to take in some good games at the TNBA Showdown in Canton while several teams ascended on Bloomington, Indiana, to match up with some of the midwest's finest teams:

Maurice O'Field, of Cleveland, has some serious hops!

TNBA Showdown: 

• King James Shooting Stars 16u: Lebron's young squad features four very solid wing prospects that all had their moments in a close win over All-Ohio Grey and a close loss to TNBA Elite. Maurice O'Field, of Cleveland Heights, gives them a ton of athleticism and slashing ability to lead the team. Jameel Moore (Cleveland Brush), Devin Wilson (Montour, PA), and Akil Blount (Washington, PA) all bring talent to the table as well. King James is a tough team to defend as all four of those wing guards have size, strength, and very good athleticism.
• All-Ohio Grey 16u: Missing all but one starter, and the majority of their bench, All-Ohio Grey was able to make a run to the semi's before losing a good game to King James Shooting Stars. Grey got some needed help from Maummee Valley Country Day PG Dave Brown, a pass first jitterbug with a high basketball IQ. Grey also got good contributions from PG Tony Kynard of Toledo Rogers and Toledo Central Catholic forward Deontae Cole.

  Royals 15u SG Cody Niesen

  TNBA Elite 16u: Mark Williams, a 6'8 PF from Cleveland Benedictine, continued his rise to the top couple of names on the Ohio 2013 rankings as he led his team to a win over King James Shooting Stars. Williams has a massive frame, athleticism, and is beginning to develop the ability to face up and play on the wing to match his post play; this kid has a very high ceiling.

Adidas May Classic:

17u 

• Queen City Prophets: Won their pool with the help of athletic 6'9 Chillicothe forward Malik London. QCP lost in first round of the Gold bracket.
• GameTime Magic- The addition of big Rozelle Nix gives them a monstrous front line to go with Chris Connell and Tank Young; this paid off as GTM won their pool. They fell in the first round of the Gold bracket.

• Queen City Prophets: Struggled in pool play with the absences of Tim Coleman, Josh Davenport, and Sterling Gilmore hurting them. They then got on a run and lost in the final of the Bronze bracket.
• Martin Woleverines- Won their pool before falling in the second round of the Gold bracket.

• 

  Royals 15u SG Austin Frentsos

  Club Ohio- Surprising pool champs behind the play of Devin Williams, who had a 37 point and 20 rebound game among several good performances. Club Ohio lost in the first round of the Gold bracket.
• Cincinnati Lakers- Won their pool then lost in the first round of the Gold bracket.

15u 

• Queen City Prophets- Advanced to the finals of the Silver bracket before falling.
• Cincinnati Lakers- Lost in the first round of the Gold bracket after taking their pools.
• Cincy Royals- Surprising run to the quarterfinals of the Gold bracket behind Roger Bacon wings Austin Frentsos and  Cody Niesen to go with some solid team play.
• Kentucky Select- Led by their two superstars, Wilmington SG Zach McCormick and Dixie Heights (KY) SG Brandon Hatton, KY Select won their super pool and then advanced all the way to the finals of the Gold bracket. 
• Shining Star (Handel)- Won their pool and advanced to the round of 16 in the Gold bracket before falling to the eventual champs Meanstreets Express out of Chicago. The team was led this weekend by the performance of St. Xavier SG Ryan Frey. 

Five Under the Radar 2012 Forwards

Michael Van Kleunen

Every year on the AAU circuit a few current juniors come out of nowhere to earn themselves college scholarships. Today we're going to take a look at five junior forwards who are seeing their stock blow up this spring. While none of these players are currently ranked in CPHR's Top 25, that could change quickly with their continued production this summer on the grassroots trail. 

• Michael Van Kleunen- 6'6 PF Mason: No one has seen their stock rise as quickly as Van Kleunen's, he was the most asked about prospect by college coaches at the Top 50 Showcase. Another skilled shooter from Mason, Michael is able to play in the post using head fakes and some deceptive strength to score the ball. He is also able to face up and knock down jumpers all the way out to the three point line. As the top inside scoring option on his Queen City Prophets squad he will have plenty more opportunities to make impressions to college coaches.

  Jacob Rossi
  

  Jacob Rossi- 6'8 SF Franklin: Very skilled inside-outside forward that can shoot the ball as well as handle it. Justin has a chance to be a utility college player that is a jack of all trades. Deceptive athleticism makes him tough to stop in transition with his Cincinnati Knights team as he can finish the play with a dunk or push the ball and set up a teammate. A tough competitor with good confidence, Rossi might be the best player in Greater Cincinnati that you've never heard of. 

• Justin Rossi- 6'8 PF Franklin: While he doesn't have quite the offensive feel for the game that his brother has, Jacob more then makes up for it by hustling and playing his role. Jacob is a good rebounder and a leaper who's energy really motivates his Cincinnati Knights squad. With a little more polishing to his ball-skills he can be as productive of a scorer as anyone on this list.

  Max Mischkulnig

  Darrin Harris- 6'5 SF Mason: CPHR has always known that Harris is a shooter with a competitive mean streak. What we didn't know is that he has an exceptional feel for the offensive end and how to create opportunities for himself with good footwork. This vision, along with a trimmed down physique have helped Darrin transition from the post to the wing. A strong athletic frame and having an array of finishing moves make him a versatile threat and a prospect to watch this spring with the Cincinnati Knights. 

• Max Mischkulnig- 6'8 PF Ross: Still a bit of a mystery prospect to college coaches, and CPHR, Mischkulnig is a player that a lot of colleges have been asking about. With quick feet that can run the floor and shooting touch to stretch the floor, Max is the best college prospect on his Club Ohio team. CPHR had a chance to see him play with Ross this season and was impressed with his physicality inside to match his post game. The jury is still out as he is an under the radar player but you will hear this name again. 

Weekend AAU Recap

Lots of great action this weekend with most teams playing somewhere, CPHR was able to take in the games at The Cincinnati Knights Tournament and Queen City Prophets Classic. Pictures from both events are available on CPHR's FaceBook page, which is linked on the left hand column.

(Fort Wayne, IN):

• All-Ohio Red: AOR continued their dominant spring by capturing 2/3 titles at one of the spring's top events. 
  • 15u: Won the championship.
  • 16u: Won the championship, while defeating All-Ohio Varsity in the semi's.
  • 17u: Lost in the round of 8 to Indiana Elite.
• OBC 16u: Lost in the round of 16 to Spiece Indy Heat.
• All-Ohio Purple: Lost in the round of 8 to the Michigan Mustangs.
• Shining Star Sports 16u Schaeffer: Lost in the semi's of the silver division.

Cincinnati Knights Tournament

• 

  Darrin Harris is one of the most improved '12 prospects.

  Cincinnati Knights 17u Gold: This was the first time that CPHR had gotten to see this whole team together in person and they are as good as the hype! All 9 of their players are able to make significant contributions for them on both ends of the floor. Semaj Christon and Keontae Brown (Dayton Dunbar) are great scorers, Mike Boyd and Ben Galemmo play their roles perfectly as guards, Paul Woodson and Mike Thipe give them athleticism and energy inside, while the Rossi twins from Franklin (who stand 6'6) and Mason's Darrin Harris provide matchup problems on the wings. The Knights rolled through this tourney undefeated, including a 30 point annihilation of All-Ohio Grey in the finals.
• All-Ohio Grey: Playing up an age group Grey was able to advance past some solid 17u teams before falling, handily, in the finals to Cincinnati Knights Gold. Top players this weekend included Gerry Green (Thurgood Marshall), Deontae Cole (Toledo Central Catholic), and Ricardo Smith (Toledo St. Johns). Tyonte Robertson, a '14 Aiken PG, showed significant improvement in his ability to play a true PG role while also scoring the ball in his return.

  Antonio Campbell is a skilled 6'6 forward with potential.

  Cincinnati Knights 17u Black: Lost in the quarterfinals to Kingdom Elite after getting second in their pool. Top performers were Bubba Hill, Trey Dees, Randale Griffith, and St. Xavier '13 SF Cameron Dunn who is really making strides this spring. 
• Cincinnati Knights 14u: Captured the 15u title behind the play of superstar PG AJ Harris (Dayton Dunbar). Along the way they defeated the Knights 15u squad and a very solid Cincy Royals 15u team. The Knights also got contributions from big man Nate Fowler (Moeller) and Luke Kennard (Franklin).
• Antonio Campbell: The Kentucky Legends have a really solid player in Cincinnati native Antonio Campbell. A 6'6 PF and current sophomore at Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy, a small charter school downtown, Antonio can stretch the defense with his deadly three ball or go up and catch an alley-oop. He is an interesting under the radar prospect in this class.

Queen City Prophets Classic

  Sterling Gilmore, one of '13 most crafty guards.

  The QCP classic matched Prophet teams against each other, on Saturday the 14u vs 15u, 15u vs 16u, 16u vs 17u, and 17u vs Prophet alumni games were all filled with talent. CPHR was only able to catch the 15u vs 16u game. 
  • The 15u team was severely undermanned with out star players Kevin Daniels and Ronnie Rousseau but still remained competitive behind the play of Taft SG Kenny Kaufman. Kenny would not be denied in this game against older competition as he scored several times from long distance; CPHR was impressed with the continued improvement that Kaufman is making with his decision making and ability to play under control. The other bright spot for the 15u squad was Isaiah Jones, the 8^th grade PG from Pleasant Ridge MS, who can really handle the ball against pressure and penetrate past his man.
  • The 16u team got solid play from it's guard unit; Tim Coleman, Sterling Gilmore, Deontae Bolling, and Nick Fredrick all were offensive forces in this game by hitting from deep and attacking the rim to set up teammates. Inside it was the play of Joe Cossins, Marquez Carpenter, and Cortez Adams that led the way with their physical play and finishing.

Wallace Prather Memorial Classic (Atlanta, GA):

• GameTime Magic 17u: Lost in the round of 16 to Minnesota Pump N Run but finished 3-2 overall against a very tough field, including an impressive win over the Atlanta Celtics who were the tournament hosts. GTM was led by Princeton '12 SG Malcolm Smith who averaged 20 ppg for the weekend. 

Top 50 Showcase- Grant Benzinger Highlights

To say that the future at Moeller is bright is like saying that Taft will have a shot at being good next year, it's stating the most obvious. That being said, the future might be even brighter then usual for the Crusaders considering all of the young talent that they have stockpiled in their building. Their freshman class, which has two of CPHR's top eleven prospects (and five honorable mentions), has a real sleeper in SG Grant Benzinger. On Sunday at the Top 50 Showcase Benzinger was as impressive as anyone playing, while competing against players that were significantly older then him. A pure shooting off guard with the ability to handle the ball, score craftily around the rim, and distribute Benzinger is one to keep an eye on; below are some highlights of him from the showcase. On the AAU scene you can find Grant with the Ohio Tarheels 15u team featuring Vincent Edwards of Middletown and St. Xavier's Roderick Mills.

Top 50 Showcase- Semaj Christon Highlights

Another great video by City League Hoops TV capturing some of Winton Woods senior PG Semaj Christon's best plays, mostly from the Top 50 Spring Showcase with a few coming from the King James Classic AAU tournament. Semaj is the hottest name in Ohio right now and will be attending prep school next year.

Top 50 Showcase Highlights- The Duel: Aaron Thomas vs Semaj Christon

The first of several highlight tapes from this weekend's action. This was a battle of two of the best in Ohio, and the entire country. Aaron Thomas and Semaj Christon went at it as the main attraction in day 1 of the showcase.

Top 50 Showcase- Day 2 Recap

Another day filled with high level talent at Hughes HS as the Top 50 Spring Showcase came to a close. Several of yesterday's top performers came up big again; particularly Moeller freshman wings Grant Benzinger and Adam Gigax who teamed up to score on what seemed like every single possession in two morning games. The action was fast paced in the younger age group as Taft '14 SG Kenny Kaufman and Hughes '14 SG Kevin Daniels also enjoyed high scoring games.

The older group started off slow but became a dunk fest as Willly Moore, Deontez McGee, Kairo Cannon, Chris Connell, Ladell Griffin, Alex Woelk, Kevin Johnson, and several others all get off multiple dunks. However, no one could match yesterday's high flying performance from Colerain freshman wing Trevon Hudson who almost tore the rim down with his LBJ like finishes.  Weekend Photos

Top 50 Showcase- Day 1 Recap

There was plenty of talents to fill the courts at Hughes HS for the first day of action at CPHR and The Cincinnati Herald's Top 50 Spring Showcase. College coaches were intrigued by several senior prospects such as Kairo Cannon, who's motor never stopped as he made plays on both ends all day long, CJ Taylor, Ryan Glass, and more. At the younger ages we saw several standout performances from big guys Garrett Maybelen, Isaiah Johnson, Chris Connell, Devin Williams, Trent Donald and more; while guards like Tim Coleman, Kevin Johnson, Kenny Kauffman, Willy Moore, Corey Wise, and Monty Boykins all stood out.

The highlight of the day was the final game in which the much anticipated match-up of Aaron Thomas and Semaj Christon finally occurred. The game was an impromptu matchup of player selected teams and was a battle from start to finish, with Semaj's team getting the 82-80 win. When the dust had settled Thomas had 47 points and Christon 39. Both of these guys hit tough shot after tough shots and showed their competitive sides in the match-up. All-Ohio Purple: Playing in a Super Pool (A loaded pool where all teams advance to Gold bracket) is never easy. That was the case this weekend for AOP who finished 1-3. Their weekend ended with a loss to the Baltimore Stars in second round of Gold. Purple lone bright spot was the continued success of Dayton Dunbar wing Gary Akbar, who is having a great spring scoring the ball and was already known as one of the most versatile forwards in the state.

All-Ohio Red: Winning the King James Classic means that you are one of the truly elite teams in the country, and that is the case with AOR. They won the Gold bracket, defeating several premiere teams, behind solid play from their bigs. Kenny Kasminski (Medina PF), Elijah Macon (Marion Franklin PF), Jalen Robinson (Northland PF), and Teddy Hawkins (Dayton Dunbar SF) all had great weekends as did Middletown combo guard Geovonie McKnight.

Cincinnati Knights: The Knights won their first four games on Saturday before losing to King James Shooting Stars in the dreaded fifth game of the day. Advancing to the round of 16 in the Gold bracket makes it a very successful weekend for the Knights who got good contributions from Semaj Christon, Mike Boyd, Darrin Harris, and Paul Woodson.

Queen City Prophets: QCP split their pool games before losing in the third round of the Silver bracket to the York Ballers (PA). Ladell Griffin, Michael Van Kleunen, and Landen Gaulden stood out this weekend for the Prophets.

OBC's Devin Williams was a dominant inside presence.

Club Ohio: Also split their pool play games and then lost in the first round of the Silver bracket. Trey Dees and Randale Griffith provided help to Club Ohio this weekend who also got great play from 6'8 Ross PF Max Mischkulnig. 

16u

All-Ohio Grey: The Grey boys ran through their pool, playing without the services of '14 Aiken PG Tyonte Robertson before losing in the Gold bracket round of 16 to OBC. Standout players for the weekend included Clemmye Owens (Toledo Rogers SG), Tony Kynard (Toledo Rogers PG), Ricardo Smith (Toledo St. Johns), Edmond “Junior” Early (Thurgood Marshall PG), and Keith Towbridge (Toledo Central Catholic PF). Grey also benefited from having Bowling Green PF Vitto Brown for the first time this season, Brown provided a shot blocking presence and offensive rebounding scoring touch that was previously missing.

Queen City Prophets: QCP won their pool then lost in second round of Gold to All-Ohio Grey. The Prophets got great toughness and leadership this weekend from Tim Coleman, of Withrow, and Walnut Hills' Sterling Gilmore. CPHR also was impressed with play of Deontae Bolling, of St. Xavier, and Northwest's Ramar Hairston.

All-Ohio Varsity: Won the Gold division and defeated all the more talented teams in their way, no one plays with more heart then Varsity. Their leader, Westerville North PG Jack Gibbs, continues to turn heads as his complete floor game is now matched by his long distance shooting.

Ohio Basketball Club: OBC advanced to the round of 8 in the Gold before losing to All-Ohio Varsity. Devin Williams had a blow up weekend for OBC by scoring and rebounding the ball at a great pace.

Tim Coleman, of QCP, had his scoring touch all weekend.

Martin Wolverines: The former Team Jordan just continues to improve as they advanced all the way to the finals of the Gold bracket before losing to All-Ohio Varsity. DJ Wingfield continues to be the leader of the team and provided great all around play to go with 6'10 Maverick Morgan of Springboro and Summit PG Antonio Woods. 

All-Ohio Red: Playing with only five players AOR advanced to the Gold bracket round of 16 before losing a close game to the Carolina Hurricanes. Having wings Austin Grimes and Jordan Lauf (Napoleon) back really helped Red due to those two's versatility and strength.

Cincinnati Lakers: The Lake show won their pool behind strong play of Dorian Jordan and Trent Donald, along with Keith Watkins (Moeller) and Ricardo Hill (Walnut Hills). They then lost in the second round of the Gold bracket to the Franchise Ballers (NY).

Club Ohio: Won their pool and lost in first round of the Gold bracket. Their top contributors were Corey Wise (Hamilton), Milt Davis (Summit), and Darius Hilson (Princeton).

15u

All-Ohio Red: Finished 0-2 in their super pool. AOR lost to Elite Expressions (MA), the eventual champs, in the Gold round of 8. Moeller's Adam Gigax stood out with his versatility on the wing this weekend for AOR.

Queen City Prophets: QCP won their pool behind the exceptional play of Winton Woods PG Ronnie Rousseau who had two games of over 25 points. QCP lost in second round of Gold bracket to West Virginia Storm.

AAU Weekend Recap:

CPHR got the chance to see some really talented AAU teams, from Ohio and everywhere else, this weekend at the annual Pitt Jamfest, at The University of Pittsburgh. Several local and state teams put together solid performances: Pitt Jamfest Photos 

Jaaron Simmons

• All-Ohio Red 16u: This team was playing as a combined effort of All-Ohio Red and All-Ohio Grey players for the weekend, due to a lack of numbers on the Red team. Playing with 7 guards and only 1 big man the team ran through pool play before falling in the second round of the Gold bracket to a loaded DC Assault squad.  
• Jaaron Simmons- The '13 PG from Kettering Alter HS showed why he was the focus of opposing teams scouting reports in the GCL all season. Simmons is a pure PG who also is capable of scoring the ball every time down the court. He has deceptive athleticism and is a good leader on the court.
• Charles Tucker- Cha Cha, a '13 PG from East Lansing HS (MI), is a well known floor general as well. CPHR immeadiatly noticed how much more comfortable Cha Cha is this season in a scoring role as he took over games when his team needed buckets down the stretch. Another pure PG with a smooth way of driving to the hole and quick feet Charles is one to watch this Spring. 
• Other AOR players: Red received nice scoring bursts from Clemmye Owens (Toledo Rogers SG), Tony Kynard (Toledo Rogers PG), Edmond Early Jr (Thurgood Marshall PG), Tyonte Robertson (Aiken PG '14), Monty Boykins (Lakota West SG), and quality inside play from Gerry Green (Thurgood Marshall PF).

• Ohio Basketball Club 16u- OBC has an extremely talented starting unit and although they struggled to play together at times their ability is obvious to any spectator. They also won their pool and lost in the second round of the Gold bracket to Team Final (PA/NJ)
• Devin Williams- The Withrow PF '13 played very well in the post this weekend, scouts that CPHR talked to like his physicality and emerging athleticism. Williams did a good job of scoring when he got his touches, whether it was on the offensive glass or a dump off pass from a guard.



Charles Tucker

• Kevin Johnson- KJ, a '13 Summit PG, kept up his steady play from this week's All-Ohio Spring Showcase, by scoring the ball well off of pull-up jumpers. Kevin showed that his athleticism is comparable to anyone on the circuit's. 

• Cincinnati Lakers 16u- This team came out struggling against a very good Garner Road (NC) team. Trent Donald (Woodward PF), Keith Watkins (Moeller PG), Ricardo Hill (Walnut Hills SG), and Dorian Jordan (Princeton PG) were able to keep them competitive for a while but Garner Road was too much for the Lakers to handle.

• All-Ohio Red 17u defeated All-Ohio Purple in the second round of the Gold bracket, in their usual hard fought rivalry match. The play of Adolphus Washington, Orlando Berry, Willy Moore, CJ Gettys (Findlay PF), and Gary Akbar (Dunbar SF) just weren't enough to overcome Red's talent. Red was led by Elijah Macon (Marion-Franklin PF), Kenny Kasminski (Medina PF), Jalen Robinson (Northland PF), and Geovonie McKnight. 

• Other teams that performed well at Pitt that CPHR was unable to see include Martin Wolverines (DJ Wingfield and Antonio Woods), All-Ohio Red 15's (Blake Simpson and Adam Gigax), and the talented All-Ohio Varsity 16u squad featuring emerging superstar PG Jack Gibbs of Westerville North.

• At other tournaments this weekend, Shining Star 16u Schaeffer led by Bryan Porter (Colerain SG) and Damarion Geter (Dunbar SF) took home the a Super Regional (National Qualifier) crown. At the 17u level the Cincinnati Knights Black squad qualified for nationals behind the play of Bubba Hill and Randale Griffith, as well as Mikey Thompson (Aiken '13 SF). The Cincinnati Knights 17u Gold team won their tournament in Indianapolis behind Ben Galemmo and Semaj Christon who each averaged close to 20 ppg and shot the lights out all weekend. Darrin Harris (PF Mason), Paul Woodson (PF Clark), and the Rossi twins of Franklin were all major contributors for the Knights.
