Division II State Championship Score

Davonte Beard led SVSM to the D-II State Title
Akron's St. Vincent-St. Mary's captures its 6th State Title (2nd most all time), and 2nd in the last three years with a win over Dayton's finest.

  • St. Vincent-St. Mary's 57 Thurgood Marshall 46: The Irish slowly expanded their lead over the first three quarters and then held on in the fourth for a comfortable win to give them the State Title. For the Irish, All-State senior guard Davonte Beard and junior wing Lorenzo Cugini took care of the offense today. Cugini, an inside-outside forward with a nice stroke, tallied 15 points while Beard scored 13 and dished out 5 assists. Beard is a crafty scoring guard that is great at changing pace and direction in the open floor then adjusting in the air to finish. All-State senior point guard Jordan Watson was the game's high scorer with 16 points for Thurgood in a losing effort. The future is bright for Thurgood as next year they will return three talented double figure scorers. What makes this championship so impressive for SVSM is that they won after their top player, Jakarr Sampson (a St. John's signee), transferred to a prep school for his senior season.
